Banana

A banana is an elongated, edible fruit produced by several species of large herbaceous flowering plants in the genus Musa. Botanically, bananas are classified as berries because they develop from a single ovary and contain seeds (though cultivated varieties are mostly seedless). Bananas are believed to have originated in Southeast Asia, particularly in regions of present-day Malaysia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea, and they are now grown in tropical and subtropical areas worldwide. Today, countries such as India, Ecuador, Philippines, and Brazil are among the top producers. Bananas are rich in essential nutrients, especially potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin C, dietary fiber, and natural sugars like glucose, fructose, and sucrose, making them a quick source of energy.

The most commercially popular variety is the Cavendish banana, which dominates global export markets due to its taste, durability, and resistance to certain diseases. However, banana crops are vulnerable to fungal diseases such as Panama disease (Fusarium wilt), which has historically devastated plantations and continues to threaten global supply. Bananas play a vital economic role in many developing countries, serving as both a staple food and a major export commodity. Beyond being eaten fresh, bananas are used in cooking (fried, boiled, baked), processed into chips and flour, and even utilized for their fibers in textiles and paper production.
