Crushed stone is a versatile construction material produced by mechanically breaking down large rocks such as limestone, granite, trap rock, dolomite, or basalt into smaller, angular fragments. Unlike naturally weathered gravel, crushed stone is manufactured in quarries where extracted rock is fed through crushers, screened to specific sizes, and sometimes washed to remove fines and impurities. Its angular shape provides excellent interlocking properties, making it ideal for structural stability in applications such as road base, railway ballast, concrete aggregate, asphalt mix, drainage systems, and foundation support. The type of parent rock determines its strength, durability, and chemical characteristics; for example, limestone is commonly used for cement production, while granite and basalt are preferred for high-strength applications due to their hardness.
Crushed stone is categorized by standardized sizes (such as 3/4 inch, 1/2 inch, or stone dust), each suited to different engineering purposes. It plays a critical role in infrastructure development worldwide, supporting highways, bridges, buildings, and water management systems. Economically, it is one of the most produced construction aggregates globally, with major production occurring in countries like United States, China, and India due to their large-scale infrastructure projects. Environmental considerations in crushed stone production include land disturbance, dust emissions, noise pollution, and energy consumption, leading to increasing adoption of sustainable quarrying practices and recycled aggregate alternatives.
